Mistral AI

📍 France 📅 Founded 2023 🏢 startup

Mistral AI was founded in April 2023 by Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample, and Timothée Lacroix — three researchers from Google DeepMind and Meta who left to build Europe's leading frontier AI company. Within months of founding it had released Mistral 7B, a model that matched Llama 2 13B in performance at half the size, establishing Mistral's reputation for efficiency. The company is headquartered in Paris and has raised €1.1 billion. Its Mistral Large model competes with GPT-4 and Claude 3 Sonnet on professional benchmarks. Mistral is notable as the only European company building models at the frontier — and has been vocal about the EU AI Act's potential to constrain European AI development. AINSI monitors its position carefully as both a commercial actor and a political voice in EU AI regulation debates.

Mistral Large 2

LLM

Released in July 2024, Mistral Large 2 (123B parameters) achieved GPT-4-level performance on coding and reasoning benchmarks. It supports a 128,000-token context window, fluency in over 80 languages, and function calling for agentic use cases. Available via the Mistral API and La Plateforme. The weights were not publicly released. Mistral Large 2 is the strongest model from a European company and demonstrates that non-US AI research can compete at the frontier.

Mistral 7B

Open Source LLM

Released in September 2023 — Mistral AI's first model, published with open weights. At 7 billion parameters it matched or exceeded Llama 2 13B on most benchmarks through architectural innovations including grouped-query attention and sliding window attention. Its release established Mistral's technical credibility and signalled that model efficiency (doing more with fewer parameters) was a viable competitive strategy against scale. Downloaded over 10 million times from Hugging Face.
